SYNOPSIS

Based on the popular comic strip and adapted from the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, with a beloved book and score by Tony Award-winners, Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, Annie KIDS features everyone’s favorite little redhead in her very first adventure.

With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone's hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Annie eventually foils Miss Hannigan's evil machinations, finding a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

Characters:

Annie is a complex, tough, streetwise orphan who is surprisingly vulnerable when she thinks she might lose what has become most important to her: her newfound "family." She should be strong vocally and musically and be able to light up the stage.

Pepper, Tessie, Kate, July, Duffy and Molly are gritty girls that are neglected and vulnerable, yet honest and lovable. Pepper is the oldest and toughest, Tessie is a cry-baby, July, Duffy and Kate are strong and independent (a trio) and Molly is the youngest.

Miss Hannigan is a definite "has-been." Her distaste for her job as the head of the orphanage should ooze from every line she delivers. She must have a strong versatile singing voice and be able to create a character that is larger than life.

Grace Farrell is Oliver Warbucks's calm, cool and classy secretary. She appears businesslike when dealing with Miss Hannigan and Warbucks, yet maternal toward Annie.

Rooster Hannigan and Lily St. Regis are the comic team who claim to be Annie's parents but are revealed to be Miss Hannigan's swindling brother and his sleazy girlfriend in disguise.

Oliver Warbucks is the daunting millionaire who made his fortune during World War I as an industrialist. In the beginning, Warbucks is awkwardly affectionate toward Annie and then finds himself completely charmed by her.

Sandy is the stray dog that Annie adopts as her best friend and confidant. Sandy has no lines but has the capability of earning spontaneous applause when he sings "Tomorrow" with Annie! NOTE: Will be played by a human!

Drake and Servants are the loyal domestic helpers of Oliver Warbucks. This group of performers sings with the ensemble but has speaking lines.

Apple Seller opens Scene 2 speaking to Annie and giving her an apple. Also appears in the Ensemble.

Lt. Ward is the policeman who questions Annie about Sandy, the stray dog. This is a non-singing role. Also appears in the Ensemble.

Bert Healy is the classic announcer on a radio show of the era. This is a non-singing role. Also appears in the Ensemble.

Bundles is the laundryman for the orphanage. This is a minor speaking role and also appears in the Ensemble.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt is enlisted by Oliver Warbucks to help locate Annie's parents. He will be pushed onstage in a wheelchair and delivers a momentous line about "A New Deal!" Also appears in the Ensemble.

Louis Howe is President Roosevelt's trustworthy aide. Also appears in the Ensemble.

Star-To-Be is a glamorous diva in the number "N.Y.C." She sings a large solo in the number and also appears in the Ensemble.

Usherette ushers Warbucks, Annie and Grace to their seats in the Roxy at the end of "N.Y.C." She has one line in that song and also appears in the Ensemble.

New Yorkers/Ensemble is comprised of a wonderfully colorful collection of characters, usually identified by their occupation. This ensemble may be orphans, street vendors, homeless people, tourists, taxi drivers, newsboys, pickpockets, street cleaners, mothers and children, and news reporters.
